Some of the technical detail is simply beyond me, but this is still an interesting read for readers interested in naval affairs. I simply had no idea of the complex interconnections that enter the equation. There are so many ways a ship can be detected--radar, sonar, satellite tracking, wake, cavitation, reflection. And there are so many variables in making a ship stealthy, so to speak.

These include humidity, temperature, ocean depth and currents, and many other factors. It seems as if stealth technology works well for small ships and if difficult for larger units. No wonder the US Navy seems to be changing to littoral ships. A reader better educated in the technology than I am might benefit more. What I have taken away from this book available at my university library is an appreciation of the very advanced systems a modern navy must master in order to remain effective.

The programme had the highest level of security; even the buildings where the research team worked had no windows, and only a minimum number of government people knew of the programme. Measuring Stealth James Clerk Maxwell — , a Scottish physicist who conducted revolutionary work on electricity and magnetism, had in the previous century derived various equations that predicted in a clear way how a regular body of a given shape would.
